New Music Friday: Jack Harlow Reinvents Himself While Hip Hop’s Heavy Hitters Drop Fresh Anthems

This week’s New Music Friday lineup is stacked, but one project stands out above the rest. Jack Harlow has returned with an album that might be the boldest artistic shift of his career.

Jack Harlow’s Soulful Reinvention

Harlow’s new album Monica shows a completely different side of the Louisville, Kentucky rapper. Instead of the playful, confident rap style fans are used to, he leans deep into neo soul vibes, stepping into the role of a smooth lover-boy crooner.

The sound feels like it could fit right alongside the legendary Soulquarians era. That’s not just a coincidence. The album was recorded at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York City, a place deeply tied to the golden era of neo soul and experimental hip hop. Artists like Questlove, D’Angelo, and J Dilla once made that studio their creative playground in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The result is a project that sounds warm, soulful, and reflective. It reintroduces Harlow as more than just a hit-making rapper. On Monica, he experiments with melody, emotion, and smoother storytelling, giving fans a whole new version of his artistry.

Street Energy From YG and More

For listeners looking for something louder and harder to kick off the weekend, YG delivers exactly that. His new single “State of Emergency” hits hard with booming production and urgent energy. The track serves as the lead single for his upcoming album and already sounds like a speaker-rattling anthem built for the streets.

Other artists also came through with fresh heat. BossMan Dlow, Chief Keef, 42 Dugg, and Luh Tyler all dropped new tracks, each bringing their own flavor of gritty street rap to the week’s playlist.

Lyricists Keep the Bars Coming

Fans of sharp lyricism also have plenty to enjoy. Earl Sweatshirt and MIKE have officially begun the rollout for their massive joint album POMPEII // UTILITY, which is rumored to feature an impressive 33 tracks.

The duo kicked things off with a double-sided single, “Minty” and “Earth,” giving fans a preview of the layered, poetic style both rappers are known for.

Meanwhile, respected wordsmiths like Ab-Soul, CyHi The Prynce, Joyner Lucas, and Samara Cyn continue to keep their audiences fed with new releases packed with clever bars and introspective storytelling.

A Surprise Comeback

One of the week’s biggest surprises comes from Rosco P. Coldchain, a former affiliate of The Neptunes and Clipse. After spending years away from the spotlight, he returns with a brand-new track titled “Benz Sprinter.”

For the comeback, Rosco teamed up with highly respected underground producer Nicholas Craven. The collaboration blends gritty lyricism with soulful, stripped-down production, reminding listeners why Rosco once stood out in the early 2000s hip hop scene.

A Packed Week for Hip Hop

From soulful experimentation to booming street records and lyrical showcases, this week’s New Music Friday proves once again how diverse hip hop has become.

Whether it’s Jack Harlow reinventing his sound, YG bringing street urgency, or Earl Sweatshirt and MIKE building anticipation for a massive project, fans have plenty of new music to dive into as the weekend begins.
